Assembly (2021)

I began collecting discarded packaging foam in early 2020 right before the pandemic hit, and I was struck by an inherent personality in many of these found foam pieces. If a singular foam piece had personality, I thought it possible to construct and assemble a group of figurative personalities from these foam pieces that worked as individual sculptures and functioned as a group. Through a year-long studio process of trial, error, and assemblage, the Assembly series took shape.

Assembly - Installation Studies

Once I assembled and painted the sculptures, I became interested in how they might interact with each other. There are two interesting options -
1. the Assembly sculptures are lined up against the wall as stoic observers while the Ranter commands their attention from a center point on the floor; or
2. the sculptures are randomly placed on the floor, as if in a town square, with the Ranter trying to gain attention; or
3. the 12 sculptures encircle the Ranter.

Assembly - Clips

Building upon the idea of interaction, I expanded the scope of Assembly by creating five short clips which use sound and mood to foster an environment
in which narrative may be implied.
